Industrial Rainwear Specification Guide

Industrial rainwear should be specified by material, construction, seam method, garment type, hood and closure design, visibility requirements, size range and tested rain-protection performance. PVC, PVC/polyester laminates and PU-coated fabrics differ in feel, flexibility, durability and construction, so material name alone is not enough.

SHORT ANSWER

Industrial rainwear should be specified by material, construction, seam method, garment type, hood and closure design, visibility requirements, size range and tested rain-protection performance. PVC, PVC/polyester laminates and PU-coated fabrics differ in feel, flexibility, durability and construction, so material name alone is not enough.

Choose the garment type

Common configurations include rain jacket, trousers, bib pants, long raincoat and two-piece rainsuit. The job and movement pattern should determine whether the wearer needs maximum coverage, easy donning or better freedom of movement.

Choose the material system

Industrial rainwear can use PVC, PVC/polyester/PVC laminates, polyester/PVC constructions or PU-coated polyester. Compare flexibility, thickness, weight, expected service life, temperature conditions and the required protection level.

Thickness and GSM are different controls

PVC rainwear is often specified by material thickness, while coated textile fabrics may be controlled by fabric weight and coating system. Always state which measurement is being used.

Seam construction matters

Needle-sewn, taped, heat-sealed and high-frequency welded seams are different constructions. Waterproof performance depends on the material, seam method and finished garment—not only the shell material.

Rain protection is not chemical protection

A waterproof garment should not automatically be described as chemical-protective clothing. Where chemical splash is a credible hazard, the correct chemical-protective standard and barrier material need to be specified separately.

Current rain-protection reference

ISO 24232:2024 covers protective clothing against precipitation, fog and ground humidity. It does not cover every form of water exposure, such as waves or other splash effects. Projects in Europe may reference the corresponding EN ISO adoption.

Visibility and reflective requirements

For road, utility and outdoor projects, the buyer may also require high-visibility colours and retroreflective material. Where ISO 20471 applies, visibility performance must be considered at complete-garment level.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Is PVC rainwear chemical-protective clothing?

Not automatically. Chemical protection needs its own hazard assessment, barrier material and applicable standard.

What is the current ISO standard for protection against rain?

ISO 24232:2024 is the current international standard for protective clothing against precipitation, fog and ground humidity.

Is thicker PVC always more waterproof?

No. Seam construction, material quality and finished-garment testing also matter.

What is the difference between welded and sewn seams?

Welded seams join compatible materials without needle holes in the seam itself; final waterproof performance still depends on the full construction.

Can rainwear also be FR and high visibility?

Yes, but those additional protections need compatible materials, garment design and verified performance.
